Your health care provider should instruct you on how to use the device at home. Always follow the plan, pressure limits, and wear times recommended by your clinician. For product options, see our Vacuum Bell systems.
How do we use the Vacuum Bell at home?
To use the vacuum bell:
- Place the device on the chest, centered over the deepest part of the pectus excavatum.
- Press the device to create an initial seal on the skin.
- Use the hand pump to remove air. If your provider gave a target pressure, follow it; otherwise, pump until you observe the chest wall rising.
- Remove the pump and close the tubing so the vacuum is maintained while moving around.
- Wear the device for the duration recommended by your health care provider.
- When time is up, gently release the vacuum and lift the device off the chest.
We produce models for both adults and children to fit different anatomies and comfort needs. If you’re unsure about sizing, review our Measurement Templates. Regular use is key for consistent results and progressive pectus healing.
How long should it be worn?
Typical starter plans use the device about 30 minutes, twice daily, gradually increasing over 4–6 weeks up to around 2 hours, twice daily, or as advised by your clinician. Many patients use the vacuum bell for 12 months or longer. Follow your provider’s schedule for the best results.
Common sensations and side effects
Mild skin redness or temporary bruising under the cup is relatively common and usually fades within hours. If advised, reduce suction to lessen these effects. Less commonly, users may feel back discomfort or a tingling/burning sensation in the arms during wear. If this occurs, remove the device, rest, and try a lower pressure later. Contact your provider if symptoms persist.
Is the Vacuum Bell painful?
Most users adapt quickly. A brief feeling of pressure or mild discomfort when first applying suction is expected, and often improves with routine.
What if my child won’t wear it?
Consistency matters. Work together to set achievable routines. The device can be worn under clothing and, if your provider allows, during quiet activities or sleep. If adherence remains difficult, speak with your clinician. Many families find that visible progress in pectus healing motivates consistent use over time.
